How hot should you run your Data Center?

How hot should you run your Data Center?

3

There is a fantastic article today in the IT News (Australia).  The article talks about having to balance rising utility costs with the need to keep a Data Center at optimum cooling conditions.  Vendors are surveyed to find out what is the “real” temperature range of their products.

The information given is quite interesting however the issue comes down to the warranty.  There is a big gray area around IT equipment warranties: what is covered and what is not.

Are most data center managers willing to risk a significant cost savings in their utilities versus a potential IT equipment failure?

We have just begun researching this exact issue at our sites in Europe. I will let you know what we find out.

Steve: We recently completed our audit in late 2009 and found that we were able to raise facility temperature by about 2 degrees. We also received a energy rebate from our local utility. After you complete your audit check with your utility for energy rebates/credits that may be available to you.

I just noticed you’re in Europe Steve. Please take note we raised the temperature 2 degrees Fahrenheit not Celsius.
